Ballet at BDTS

Ballet classes at BDTS require children and teens to make a commitment. We know that they are offered a huge variety of after-school activities and we are supportive of that, but because learning ballet is such a demanding endeavor we expect our students who enroll in Ballet levels 3 through 6 to "show us their commitment". This means coming to class with an excellent attendance record, a continued observation of the dress and behavior code and respect for their teachers and classmates.

Skillfulness and performance quality are not our end goals. Teaching young people that there is intrinsic reward gained through intense involvement is our goal.
We also know one very important fact: Success at any endeavor is achieved more from an intense effort accomplished by internal motivation than by a pre-occupation with external rewards like parent/teacher/friend approval, applause, "being the best in class" etc.

Advancement through levels is skill based for the most part
Placement in a particular level is by teacher recommendation
Pointe class is always optional
Pointe class pre-requisites are strictly adhered to
at least 3 years prior ballet of twice a week
ballet class 3 times each week (with excellent attendance)
pointe class 2 times per week
a good pass grade on the pointe test
   instructor recommendation
   a minimum age of 10 (usually 11)
Missing 3 (for any reason) classes in the final semester: students will be excused from Showcase.
